The Triumph Community Development Foundation is excited to continue its relationship with our community partner, The Salvation Army of Memphis & the Mid-South. The Salvation Army of Memphis runs the Purdue Center of Hope – a safe haven for the women confronting their addictions, fighting poverty, and seeking refuge from violence and homelessness through five programs housed by the center.
What makes the Salvation Army stand out in the city-wide mission to help Memphians navigate these obstacles? The Purdue Center of Hope is the only shelter in the city that provides housing and services for the children as well as the single mothers seeking a new beginning in the long-term residential programs.
The Salvation Army allocates much attention and care to the children through the Youth Development program. Every child that arrives at the Purdue Center of Hope with adverse childhood experiences and performs below grade level. The long-term academic support and emotional nurturing empowers the children with confidence in the classroom. According to Slingshot Memphis, a renowned research group, every child who has participated in the Purdue Academy has left the program performing at grade level or above grade level – a success factor the organization is working hard to maintain in the pandemic.
In the wake of COVID-19, Shelby County schools transitioned to 100% virtual learning for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. The organization has sought out multiple avenues to ensure their students achieve the same levels of success despite the challenges of learning remotely. The Triumph Community Development Foundation’s grant supports a virtual tutor to assist the children with their work for 20 hours a week. The tutor will give the students the consistent trust and care they would receive from a teacher, an imperative factor in the Salvation Army’s process of healing.
Our communities have faced their own sets of challenges this year, and we are humbled to be surrounded by such resilient organizations and people. We are thankful to have a community partner like The Salvation Army of Memphis and are honored to support the organization’s mission to heal our hometown of Memphis.
